Just Fishin' Guides Profile

 ABOUT US

With over 35 years of fly fishing experience and over 10 years guiding, Ken Richards, owner of Just Fishin' Guides, has the knowledge to guide your fishing excursion  - whether it's wading or in a Hyde drift boat, fly or spinning rods. His love for the outdoors and passion for fly fishing are contagious. You and your party will enjoy some of the greatest waters in the four state area.

Experienced and novice fly fishers alike will enjoy their Just Fishin' Guides excursion. We tailor each trip to your experience and desires. If you are just starting your fly fishing experiences, Ken can teach you some of the basic elements of fly fishing. We even have equipment, so you don't have to invest in rods and reels to try your hand at fly fishing. Consider yourself an experienced fly fisher? You'll appreciate Ken's knowledge of area streams and rivers. And he's always willing to trade fishing secrets with you.

Like to fish, but without a fly rod? We're experienced with spin fishing and will do everything possible to make your fishing trip enjoyable. Regardless of your skill level, you'll have an experienced guide with your safety and success as his only concerns for your trip. We work hard so you can enjoy your day with us.

Me back in the old days in Michigan.

Just Fishin' Guides came about after a lifelong love of the outdoors. I happened to be lucky enough to be raised in a family that did all the outdoor stuff and instilled a respect for nature.  I started fishing in Michigan at our cabin on the South Fork of the Au Sable River in Roscommon. My dad says he used to tie me to him and we'd fish out of the canoe before I was four. I started fly fishing when I was twelve, little popping bugs for bluegills, with an old Montague cane rod that was handed down from my uncle and dad. I went to college to study fish and game management at Arkansas Tech.

After college I got interested in photography and for fifteen years was in the photo business. As my family grew up, I started taking my son trout fishing on the White River below Beaver Dam and teaching him to fly fish. Travels all over the United States has given me a chance to fish from Washington to Michigan, Arkansas to New Mexico, even the Caribbean. Fly fishing was becoming an obsession. After a trip to Wyoming in 1995 with my son, it really hit me that I needed to be in the outdoors again. I then began building my guide business. With my background in nature and photography, I hope I can give you more than just a fishing trip.

And by the way, I still have and use that Montague rod.     "PS - I've even bought another one!"

Me and my favorite freshwater fish, the smallmouth bass.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

As some of you may know, in June of 2005, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 squamous cell cancer of the tongue and throat. It had metastized to the lymph nodes of my neck, shoulder and chest. In July, I had surgery to remove the lymph nodes and then started radiation and chemotherapy. I was one of the very lucky ones that became very, very sick from them. I finished my treatments the last of September 2005. That was the beginning of my recovery. Since the radiation had burned my throat, I had a feeding tube inserted in August 2005 and was on that until the last of May 2006. Physical therapy has gotten my strength back, at least most of it. I am now working to get the rest of it back. One after effect from the radiation is I do not have any saliva glands so I must drink a lot of water. So on my guide trips we will be stopping for breaks often to get rid of some of that water. All the tests show I am free of the cancer now and am raring to go.

Hope to see you. Thanks to all that have offered their support and prayers.    Ken
